Most musculoskeletal conditions and pain syndromes respond favorably to chiropractic care. The conditions listed here are essentially the most frequently seen at our office. Please contact the clinic if you have questions about a particular problem.

Discs are the stabilizers, connectors and shock absorbers for the spine. They're constructed of soft, fibrous tissue with a jelly-like center. Disc problems can vary from a mild bulge or tear of the disc material to a severe rupture that will require surgery. The onset of pain is often sudden and severe, or you may just notice increased pain with prolonged sitting. Most frequently disc problems exist in the lower back or lumbar spine. They could also present in the neck area. More severe cases are associated with arm or leg pain. Discs can improve with chiropractic care but an MRI may be necessary to determine the severity of the individual case.  Some cases can respond slower than others.  This is because discs have poor blood flow and heal slower.  Light spinal manipulation and other modalities, stretches, and/or exercises may be discussed with you to do at home. It is important to enhance fluid transfer to the injured disc, permitting them to heal. We aim to reduce the need for surgical intervention.

Fibromyalgia affects from 3-6 million Americans, mostly 25-50 year old women. Although in-depth studies have yielded few answers, it's believed that victims have reduced circulation to their muscle cells, which damages the cells' energy producing mechanism. Their bodies also breakdown muscle protein at an unusually high rate, which may be one of the main reasons for the typical pain, aching and fatigue. There may also be an increased sensitivity of nerves. Proper diagnosis of fibromyalgia is based on 18 trigger points throughout one's body which are nearly all painful or tender. Most traditional pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs have proven to be ineffective in the treatment of fibromyalgia, although proper dieting and nutritional supplementation has been promising. Due to the association with reduced circulation to muscle cells and possibly nervous compromise, Chiropractic concentrates on improving circulation, restoring proper skeletal alignment and nervous system function. Severe cases respond to combining chiropractic, massage, and possibly other therapies.

Hip bursitis is an annoying pain along the side of the thigh. It's caused by an inflamed fluid filled cushion (bursae) which lies underneath the hip muscle. Characteristically, symptoms include pain when lying on your side. The pain is most prominent in the hip and may even radiate down the side of the leg. Bursitis is brought on by altered pelvic and hip biomechanics with tight muscles. Once irritated, the bursae will become inflamed and cause a substantial amount of hip pain. Specific adjusting in addition to physical therapy will heal the area quickly without long-term consequence. This responds quite well to chiropractic care. It is important to ensure an underlying cause of hip pain such as a degenerative hip is not the case and an x ray may need to be performed.

80% of Americans have instances of back pain in their life. The earlier treatment was to take medicine and rest for two weeks. Today's typical care involves immediate treatment with manipulation, physical therapy and exercises. At Vankoevering Chiropractic, treatment and prognosis are based upon the kind of tissue involved and the mechanism of pain. Many cases including disc, muscle spasm, or simple joint fixation respond to care well. A conservative approach is vital to healing and preventing on-going back pain.

Everybody has been troubled with neck pain and headaches at one time or another. Pain is a distress signal. Something is wrong. Many times headaches are caused when spinal bones in your neck aren't moving properly causing the muscles to tighten. This can affect the nerves, ligaments and blood flow to the head and shoulder region. At Vankoevering Chiropractic, the physicians concentrate on treating the underlying cause of neck pain and headaches. Re-aligning the vertebrae in the neck, upper back, and shoulder area help restore proper functioning of the vertebra, removing muscle spasm. Massage and exercises help prevent re-occurrence of the problem. We may also discuss any nutritional deficiency, dehydration, or poor posture that may be an underlying cause of headaches.

Patellofemoral Syndrome afflicts plenty of people, especially women. The condition is characterized by knee pain around the knee cap, and "creaking" of the knees. Often times it's brought on by improper tracking of the knee cap along with the knee itself. As the tracking slips off course, the cartilage behind the knee degenerates and knee pain occurs. At VanKoevering Chiropractic we may adjust the hip, knee, ankle, or foot joint to help restore proper biomechanics of the lower limb. We may also discuss stretches or exercises you can do at home or suggest another adjunct therapy.

The birth process, even under natural and controlled conditions, is potentially traumatic. The pulling, pushing and twisting of the newborn's neck and spine during birth will commonly cause the small moldable vertebra to be pushed out of alignment. Nerves exiting these vertebra send information to all areas of the body and while irritated can wreak havoc on an infant or child's body. Because the spine continues to develop into your twenties, the misaligned spine might be the underlying cause of symptoms as varied as colic, earaches, unexplained crying or pain, poor appetite, digestive difficulties, difficulty breast feeding, etc. At VanKoevering Chiropractic, we put special emphasis on evaluation of your little one's development that will help improve your child's overall health and wellness. Adjustment techniques are modified for the child's weight and size and often activator or just light finger tips are used. It's a wonderful gift to be able to give your child the gift of health through preventive and corrective care before problems occur later in life. Keep in mind that good spinal hygiene/posture is a crucial component in your child's good health.

Plantar fascitis is a condition in which the thin layer of tissue on the bottom of the foot (fascia) becomes inflamed or irritated. Symptoms include heel pain on walking, especially the first steps out of bed each morning. Swelling and numbness occasionally accompany the problem. Causes include muscle tightness, occasionally a spur may irritate, and most commonly poor biomechanics is the cause. We understand how to correct this pain through restoration of proper biomechanics of the foot, ankle, and even the low back. Adjustments of these areas will be rendered along with stretches or exercises. We may refer you to get a properly fitted orthotic for your foot. Give your feet a break and find explanation for the ache.

Sciatica is an extreme pain shooting down one or both of your legs. The sciatic nerve is the largest and longest nerve in your body. It begins in the lower back and courses through the buttocks, down the thigh and leg to the foot. Pressure to the nerve from any source creates pain down the nerve generally known as sciatica. The pain might be intense, burning, or tingling in part or the entire leg. Some instances are less intense with aching into the buttocks. This may just be dysfunction of the sacro-iliac joint that is referring pain into the buttock. It is common for people to lose strength in the leg when sciatica is present. Common causes of sciatica include, joint inflammation, disc bulge, muscle spasm and arthritis. Fortunately, most cases of sciatica respond favorably to natural chiropractic care. The more severe and extended sciatica, the more time that it typically takes to treat. An MRI referral may be necessary to determine the possibility of a severe disc herniation.

Scoliosis is condition of spinal deformity. The spine grows sideways, bent and twisted rather than straight. The condition can predispose to back pain, premature arthritis, and perhaps respiratory and other internal problems. Spinal curvature most often affects girls between the ages of 8 and 18. In some instances kids are born with scoliosis. All children ought to be checked for scoliosis, especially if a parent has this spinal problem. At VanKoevering Chiropractic, our goal is early detection and treatment with corrective spinal manipulation, massage therapy and structural strengthening exercises. Severe cases with rapidly advancing curvature might have to be referred for surgery. Obviously we treat MANY adults with scoliosis. In several cases they're shocked when their X-rays show curvature. Care improves function and provides relief to their back pain, but cannot fully correct the curvature although many times minor improvements are seen. Chiropractic offers hope for a healthy pain free life for the people affected by scoliosis.

Shoulder injuries are characterized by pain and tenderness within the shoulder, arm, back or neck region. Causes vary from trauma to overuse injuries of the muscle, ligaments, and tendons that surround the shoulder and neck regions. Our doctors are very effective in identifying and treating these kinds of injuries through manipulation, stretches, and possibly massage or other soft tissue modalities.

Whiplash is understood to be a neck injury brought on by over-extending and/or flexing the neck. This may happen during a car accident, sports injury, roller coasters, or perhaps a fall. Symptoms usually include neck pain, headache, dizziness, fatigue, irritability, shoulder and low back pain. More severe manifestations are difficulty swallowing, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, nausea and weakness. Although most persons start to notice symptoms immediately following a trauma, they can be slow to develop and begin several weeks after the injury. If left untreated, whiplash can result in chronic and recurring problems, such as arthritis, headache, and stiffness. At VanKoevering Chiropractic, we are very effective at treating whiplash so that that your recovery time is minimized. The goal is to return you to your active lifestyle as soon as possible.
